Know Your Fish

Picture
  • “There’s plenty of fish in the sea”, hundreds of edible species in fact, right here in the Mediterranean Sea. Yet, only a select few are popular and consumed. This has put fisheries in Lebanon under a lot of stress in many cases pushed them to the brink of collapse.
  • In February 2019, hoping to curb the situation, Diaries of the Ocean partnered with marine biologists in India, creators of the Know Your Fish initiative. Together, we took up an extensive and thorough research to collect data on each fish’s biological and ecological traits for both native and invasive species in Lebanon. We came up with a list of fish and fish traits that guided our recommendations for fish to eat and fish to leave at sea each season.

Here’s this season’s recommendation:
Important facts:
  • Refraining from catching and consuming the following native fish favors their reproduction and helps them to maintain their life cycle.
  • Consuming introduced species all year long is ideal for protecting our marine ecosystem, as well as giving the local fishermen an added source of income and an opportunity to revive their fish market. This is our pick of the most healthy and delicious fish that aren’t naturally found in the Mediterranean Sea.
